Maine Sports Betting Information & Timeline
Maine sports betting was first legalized in early May 2022 when Gov. Janet Mills signed L.D. 585, leglizing both retail and online sports betting. Just 90 days later, sports betting in Maine became law.
About fifteen months after that, online and retail sportsbooks in Maine are now taking bets. In total, over 30 states have commenced some type of sports betting operations since a Supreme Court ruling in 2018 set the stage for each state to offer wagering on its own terms.
The bill, L.D. 545, allows for betting at Maine’s seven licensed retail locations. There are a pair of casinos in Bangor and Oxford, along with four OTB locations in Bangor, Lewiston, Watervill and Sanford. But the overwhelming majority of wagering will come from mobile betting, as it does in every state where both are legal.
As mentioned above, the state’s four tribes have control of mobile wagering operations. The Penobscot, Micmac and Maliseet have signed on with Caesars, while the Passamaquoddy are with DraftKings.
It has been a long road in Maine, with previous efforts to legalize wagering being thwarted in 2020. But finally, a deal could be made not only to satisfy the tribes and regulators, but one that offers both mobile and retail to the people of the state.
