A historic and unique commemorative event is set to take place in Kilkenny’s Rothe House and Garden this month.
The Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum is coming to the city to remember Boston Tea Party participant and Kilkenny native Thomas White.
Thomas White was born in 1739 and had emigrated to America by 1771 when he joined the Sons of Liberty in Boston. He was a tailor by trade and was also a Freemason, which gave him a connection to many known revolutionaries of the time.
Until now, his participation in the historic Boston Tea Party in 1773 has largely gone unrecognised in Kilkenny.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of what was a pivotal incident in the lead-up to the American Revolutionary War. To date, 132 markers have been placed in memory of known Tea Party participants. On Sunday, September 24 a commemorative event will take place in Rothe House and Garden.
“Rothe House is not only an historic tourist destination but we are also the centre for Kilkenny family history research where we provide a genealogy service for those with Kilkenny roots,” explains General Manager Valerie O’Sullivan.
“It’s only fitting, therefore, that we would be the location for this commemoration, which we are really delighted to be hosting.”
The event will begin at 2pm, with music, speeches, and a costumed re-enactor from Boston. Thomas White will be remembered with the planting of a white rose in the rose bed of the restored walled garden, where a commemorative plaque will also be unveiled.
Guests in attendance will include organisers of the 250th anniversary celebrations from Boston, the Cathaoirleach and the Mayor of Kilkenny City, and representatives of Rothe House Trust.
The event will be open to the public.
