The ship was said to be carrying more than 100 migrants when it ran into trouble at dawn on Sunday, with bodies washing ashore in Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort in the province of Crotone.
Danilo Maida, a spokesman for the firefighters in the Calabria region, said the number of deaths "has surpassed 30".
