It’s a dream of every bride to walk down the aisle with their father to the man they love. And certainly enough, so was Serena Williams. However, not every dream comes true, and consequently, the 23-time Grand Slam champion walked down the aisle alone. Eerily similar to her best friend and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle’s predicament; the only difference was that for Serena it was a last-minute change. How did she handle it? What did she say to her father in response?

Like every bride, Serena Williams was busy making the most important day of her life impeccable, nothing short of a fairy tale. However, Richard Williams’ last-minute decision not to attend the ceremony made things difficult for the bride.

Serena Williams was a beautiful bride when she walked down the aisle with her eyes on the man standing at the altar. The American tennis legend opened up about how the event unfolded in the third episode of the HBO documentary ‘Being Serena’, revealed by People in 2018.

Richard Williams informed Serena of his absence through a text message. “He was in New Orleans, he had a suit, and I know he was really excited.” she further explained, “Serena, I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I just can’t walk you down the aisle. I’m not myself anymore. I’m just too nervous.”

With a guest list spanning people from across fields and including the likes of Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. But everyone’s attention was on the absence of the bride’s father. However, Serena understood her father’s struggles and replied to her father, “Daddy, it’s okay, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay too. I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it.”

Truly, family and friend support each other during the crests and troughs of life. Hence, it wasn’t surprising when her friend, Meghan Markle, came to her aid.

Meghan Markle’s steady support to her bestie

Like Serena, the then-soon-to-be Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, had also confirmed that she would be walking down the aisle alone. Much like Richard Williams, Markle’s father was also not in his best health to escort her down the aisle, as confirmed by a statement from Kensington Palace. But to help Markle on her special day, Serena advised her bestie to enjoy every moment of the day. And not to forget to eat her wedding cake.
