The Oakland Athletics added to their bullpen Friday, agreeing to terms with right-hander Trevor May on a one-year, $7 million contract.
May, 33, had a 5.04 ERA in 26 games with the Mets in 2022, a season that included a three-month stint on the injured list because of an inflamed right triceps. He posted a 3.24 ERA over his final 18 regular-season appearances before adding two scoreless postseason outings.
From 2018 through 2021, May’s ERA ranged from 2.94 to 3.86.
To make room for May on the roster, the A’s designated outfielder Cody Thomas for assignment. Thomas was 8-for-30 in 10 games this year.
New deals:
All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi agreed to a five-year, $75 million deal with the White Sox.
Benintendi, 28, was a Gold Glove winner with the Royals in 2021 and was chosen to his first All-Star team last season before Kansas City traded him to the Yankees on July 27. He hit a career-high.304 in 126 games, though his home run total dropped to five from 17 in 2021.
Benintendi batted.254 in 33 games with the Yankees and missed the playoffs because of a broken right wrist.
“Beni’s a guy that came in here and fit in really well, obviously got hurt and had his season shortened, especially when he was really starting to play well for us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “So whatever the ending, if that is actually true, he’s a great player and was a really good teammate.”

First baseman Eric Hosmer was designated for assignment by the Red Sox to make room on the roster for right-hander Wyatt Mills, who was acquired from Kansas City for minor-league right-hander Jacob Wallace. Hosmer, 33, batted.268 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs last season with the Padres and Red Sox…. Boston also traded infielder Hoy Park to the Braves for a player to be determined or cash.
