An eventful, and long opening race to the third round of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs has left the remaining 12 drivers scratching their heads, as things continue to heat up as they travel to Alabama to take to the famous banks of the Talladega Superspeedway to compete in the YellaWood 500.
In the opening race of the Round of 12, wrecks occurred everywhere at Texas Motor Speedway. Lots of aggressive driving and tensions led to multiple crashes, with a red-flag delay mixed, it had a little bit of everything. Yet, coming out on top was a driver who had just been eliminated from the postseason. Tyler Reddick, who won his first two Cup races earlier this year, both on road courses, finally grabbed the checkered flag on an oval, outlasting championship contender Joey Logano.
The second place finish places Logano at the top of the playoff standings coming into ‘Dega. That is big for the 2018 series winner, who has definitely had his ups-and-downs throughout the 2022 season. Logano currently leads Ross Chastain by 14 points coming into Sunday, and 30 points clear of the cut-off line with one more race in the round remaining.
The four drivers looking to make some hay in the second race of the Round of 12 include Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric and Chase Briscoe, all of which trail Chase Elliott for the eighth in points, with Briscoe just four back of the regular season champion.
Of the drivers remaining in the playoffs, only five have previously won at ‘Dega. That includes Chastain, who was victorious in the regular season event, while Logano, Denny Hamlin, and the still-winless Ryan Blaney have ended up in victory lane at the superspeedway.
